Repost: Staying Dynamic in Children's Ministry – #4 Be Involved in Your Community

You can read an explanation of this series here.

4. Be Involved in Your Community

I’ve found that being in full-time vocational church ministry it is very hard to be actively involved in the community. We spend so much time putting our programs together and getting people to come to us that we never get out there and be a part of what’s going on in the community.

What things are you doing that are alternatives or duplicates of what is happening in the community? What are the ways that you are getting involved in community activities? How are you serving your community?

God is already working in your community. You need to find it and support it and be a part of it. We act, too many times, as if people exist so that the church can keep truckin’. We exist for our community. When we do that we are being missional, we are bringing glimpses of God’s Kingdom to this earth.

When we look outside of ourselves and get involved in our communities, we will happen upon new ways of ministry that we could never think of on our own.

What are some ways you’ve been involved in your community? What ways have you changed that wouldn’t have otherwise happened?

Are you suggesting we be missional? 😉

My family and I have recently started fostering children; and most of our reasons are in response to Jeremiah 29:5. As a pastor working at a church in town, we became worried that our mission and vision were watered down by an overall lack of community involvement.

So in addition to fostering, we are also volunteering at a homeless food shelter; and getting more involved in youth sporting organizations (since my kids played anyway). These small tweaks in our lifestyle, have opened doors for us in our community that working at a church could never have done.

Ha! In a sense, yes. I hesitate to equate missional with community involvement or service or social justice, though. Missional is first and foremost a change in DNA and ethos. Everything else we do flows out of a missional mindset. We can do all of those things (community involvement, service, social justice, etc.) and still not be missional. For a good example, take a look at many of the urban gospel mission type establishments. They do a lot of good, but I wouldn’t call what they do missional. Missional goes to the core of how we view what the gospel and Kingdom of God is. Here’s a great link that hits the heart of what a missional mindset is http://vanguardchurch.blogspot.com/2011/02/one-thing-that-you-wish-youth-pastors.html

I’m planning on doing a new series of posts to break down what I see as essential in having a children’s ministry with a missional mindset because the term is being kicked around a lot, and I think that without a clear sense of what it means and how it gets played out that “missional” will lose it’s meaning.

BTW, kudos to jumping into the world of fostering. I know what you mean about losing connection with the community while being on staff. It’s so easy to do.
