  • 7:19 PM henryjz - 8-18 year olds… 20% are in house when tv on during meals, on virually all the time with no one watching and no restriction by parents
  • 7:20 PM henryjz - media consumption is only outstripeed by sleep with kids
  • 7:20 PM henryjz - tv gone from “family programming” to “kid programming”
  • 7:20 PM henryjz - Disney doing more kids movies because it is more profitable

  • 7:21 PM henryjz - good thing… kids spend less time watching adult themed tv shows
  • 7:23 PM henryjz - downside… less motivation to create family-friendly programming anywhere else (so mainstream tv is more vulgar) because nick and cartoon network and disney doing it all
  • 7:23 PM henryjz - major networks are suffering because of it “HBO envy”
  • 7:24 PM henryjz - networks want to be like HBO because HBO is winning the awards.. so you get shows like Desperate Housewives, et al.

  • 7:25 PM henryjz - kids don’t want to be kids anymore
  • 7:26 PM henryjz - Phil’s grade 8 son saying he is only one who can’t watch South Park or Family Guy
  • 7:26 PM henryjz - by segregating kids into their own little world, once decide too old, then their is nothing in the middle

  • 7:27 PM henryjz - childhood getting younger and younger… what happens when kids are done with Dora

  • 7:30 PM henryjz - we are idealizing a “Spring Break mentality”… time between leaving parents and assuming responsibility of adulthood
  • 7:30 PM henryjz - next issue… “compartmentalization”
  • 7:31 PM henryjz - they go to church and get god, then go home and watch tv with no reference of god
  • 7:32 PM henryjz - God exists on Sunday, and the rest of the week he is gone
  • 7:32 PM henryjz - they spend more time in front of screens where world is free of God
  • 7:32 PM henryjz - spiritual and secular get compartmentalized
  • 7:33 PM henryjz - next issue… “advancing a new religion through media of FUN”
  • 7:33 PM henryjz - everything is about “fun”
  • 7:33 PM henryjz - example of phil driving by a restaurant, “Come in and have fun!” what about food???
  • 7:34 PM henryjz - “Theology of Fun”
  • 7:34 PM henryjz - fun appears 0 times in ESV and 1 time in NIV :)
  • 7:35 PM henryjz - A theology of fun is extra-biblical
  • 7:37 PM henryjz - enertainment is like feeding kids marshmallow peeps… it’s all fun and no substance

  • 7:37 PM henryjz - Phil’s quote in response to people complaining about Christians abandoning the media
  • 7:38 PM henryjz - Entertainment was all about vaudeville, burlesque, etc. so Christians stayed away at the beginning

  • 7:44 PM henryjz - VeggieTales for example comes from Christian music, which comes from Christian books, which is more entertainment driven
  • 7:44 PM henryjz - 1999 Christian entertainment peaked and in decline because Christian bookstores are going out of business, which was the model for distribution
